Hazardous Materials Incident

March 19th started with a unique situation as firefighters were called to a garbage truck on fire in Anderson Mill. First arriving Engine 38 found a garbage truck that was not on fire, but whose operator was complaining of nausea after compacting a load of refuse from a residence.

Captain Chelf called for the Williamson County Hazardous Materials Team to the scene. The team is made up of members from fire departments in Jollyville, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, and Taylor.

The incident was dispatched at approximately 09:30 and all units were clear by 1:30 in the afternoon. The truck operator who first experienced the symptoms was evaluated on scene by Williamson County EMS, but was transported to Seton NorthWest Emergency Room by his supervisor and later released. No other injuries or exposures were reported.

The chemical in the truck was later determined to be muratic acid left over from pool cleaning supplies. The acid was neutralized in the back of the truck using soda ash.
