Structure Fire In Sam Bass
January 5, 2008
B shift firefighters in the midst of a staff meeting were called out to help in the Sam Bass district with a house fire. First arriving Truck 2 from Sam Bass reported smoke showing and initiated an aggressive interior attack. The fire was fast moving and was found to be in the crawl space between the first and second floors as well as in the attic by the time Jollyville Engine 38 arrived. Jollyville acted as the RIC Team and a unit from Cedar Park arrived and assisted the interior operations for a short time before the determination was made to move to a defensive mode of operation. The fire was quickly then contained after a short time using the bucket of Truck 2. After the fire was contained, crew reentered the house to extinguish.
Although there was significant damage to the structure, crews were able to save some family pictures and other sentimental items for the family.
An engine from Austin was special called to the scene, and Round Rock Engine 5 protected the Sam Bass district while crews were on scene.

Training With New Equipment
August 22, 2007
Firefighters from all three shifts at both stations completed training with new rescue equipment recently. The equipment, known as the Res-Q-Jack, is used to help stabilize automobiles after they have been involved in collisions. Although the new Res-Q-Jack equipment is used for dozens of situations, the most common scenario would involve an automobile on it’s roof or side. Also, the Jack’s can be used if the terrain the cars end up on is unstable. Even though the equipment looks awkward in photos, it is very easy to set up and is able to be deployed in under 6 minutes on average. Although the firefighters will have to get used to the new equipment, we are excited to have another tool available for the citizens. At this time, Jollyville, Cedar Park, Leander, and Hutto are the only departments in the Austin metro area carrying some version of the Jacks.
